Wrapped Still LifesOil painting on canvas, 2012
These canvases were painted from direct observation at a realistic scale, with an attention to details inspired by still life paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries, while making a nod at the contemporary concept of ready-made. Here the butcher and the supermarket employee become the authors of those found compositions. The vacuum sealed packages allowed me to paint the subjects over the course of several days, helping to slow down the decomposition process. The meticulousness of the rendering contrasts with the ordinary function of these products, aimed at quick consumption. This project is meant to question our general obsession with sanitization, preservation and marketing.
