Combini serie
Woodkiln fired stoneware
2019
This group of sculptures were created during my two months residency at the Shigaraki Ceramic Culture Park in Japan in summer 2019.
The reflexion underlying this body of work was to create a connection between the strong pottery tradition and the ephemeral and fast paced consumerist culture in Japan. The title ''Combini'' refers both to the act of combining shapes or ideas to create new meanings, while making a nod a the ''Konbinis''; the omnipresent convenience stores where one can buy almost everything including meals to-go.
To create these sculptures, I collected plastic packagings over the course of my stay in Japan. These objects were moulded in plaster, cast in ceramic and combined to create these hybrid sculptures. I used a white clay typical of the Shigaraki region and fired the works in a ''Ittekoigama'' woodkiln. The variegated colorations are obtained solely from the ashes falling on the pieces over the course of the firing, the results are thus completely unpredictable and each work unique.
